Ik speel mee in 'Werfpop, de Rockopera' op 9 juli 2011 a.s. in de Leidse Hout

Werfpop bestaat 30 jaar en dat zal niet ongemerkt voorbij gaan. Op zaterdagavond 9 juli, de avond voor het festival, wordt in de Leidse Hout ‘Werfpop, de rockopera’ opgevoerd, een unieke rockopera over Werfpop zelf met muziek, dans, toneel, videoprojecties en special effects. Het wordt een spectaculaire voorstelling met een cast van ca. 40 mensen. Aan de voorstelling doen o.a. mee cabaretier Vincent Bijlo, Ludwig Smith, Rob Wiedijk, een koor olv. Erik van Bruggen, breakdancecrew Spinning Keys, olv. Samir Boultam, de Werfpopband met Martijn Groen, Hein Linger, Joost van der Graaf en Ewald Ebing, Daniel de Jongh (Textures), de rappers van Vlijmscherp, sopraan Gerrie de Vries, Marco Hilgeman, Pieter de Mast, Wouter Kiers, Hans van Scharen, Pascal Janssen en TV West weerman Huub Mizee. Voor het spel tekenen o.a. Kim van der Heijden, Erik Siebel en niemand minder dan wethouder Jan-Jaap de Haan. De muziek in de rockopera is van bands die de afgelopen jaren op Werfpop hebben gestaan zoals Fishbone, Epica, Claw Boys Claw, Typhoon, Desmond Dekker, The Bob Color, Third World en The Continental Drifters. De meeste nummers zijn bewerkt en hebben een nieuwe, Nederlandse tekst gekregen. De scènes in de rockopera vertellen het verhaal van Werfpop. Voorbij komen o.a. roadies, de soundcheck, het weer, de rechtszaak in 1998, de security, geluidsoverlast, de schoonmaak en nog veel meer. De regie is in handen van Bart Vieveen, muzikaal coördinator is Marc Baronner (ex-Kraak & Smaak), de videoprojecties zijn van Jos Agasi en Jurjen Alkema en het decor/special effects van Andrea Dröes. Hier moet je bij zijn!!!!
De voorstelling begint om 21.30 uur, het terrein gaat om 21.00 uur open. Kaartjes kosten € 7,50 en je kunt ze bestellen via de website, bij alle Primerawinkels en bij Plato en Velvet in Leiden.

Performing Moluccan songs at a symposium at the Museum voor Volkenkunde, Leiden

On 19 May 2010, while attending the symposium 'Musical Encounters between Indonesia and the Netherlands' at the Museum voor Volkenkunde (Ethnological Museum) in Leiden, the Netherlands, I was invited to join a musical performance which aimed to show the living tradition of performing traditional songs by Moluccans in the Netherlands.



This video shows an unrehearsed version of a famous Moluccan song, Beta Belayar Jauh (I Am Sailing Far Away).

Reunion concert of my high school band Umatilla at the Melkweg, Amsterdam

After 28 years, my high school band Umatilla reunited at the Melkweg in the Leidseplein area of Amsterdam, with a repertoire consisting of originals (including Latitude, Spotlights, Living In Another World, and Angin-angin) as well as covers including Dance (Sun), Suavecito (Fania All Stars), Top Secret (Yellowjackets), and Rame-rame (Nona Padede), a Moluccan traditional made famous by Utha Likumahuwa (and recently by Glenn Fredley). The venue is located within half a mile from Paradiso, where the band played its last major concert in 1982 at the Moluccan Moods Festival.

Umatilla was founded in 1979 by a group of Moluccans (from what is now the Maluku archipelago in Indonesia) in Amsterdam. Later, a few Dutch musicians (including yours truly on keyboards) joined the group. It had a considerable following in Amsterdam, mostly among people of Moluccan and Indonesian-Dutch background. The band initially modelled itself after the then-popular Moluccan-Dutch band Massada, which in turn was strongly influenced by the Latin rock of Santana, but soon started writing its own material, gradually incorporating more soul, funk and jazz/fusion elements.

The line-up at the Melkweg concert consisted of: Steve Inoeng (guitar/vocals), Johnny Wattimury (guitar/vocals), Harold Wattimury (drums), Edmund Vreede (percussion), Ewald Ebing (keyboards), Jay-Tee Teterissa (bass), and guest vocalist Laurens Vitalis. Not present was tenor sax player Robin Verburg, who could not be located.

Earlier line-ups had included bass players Diana Inoeng (Steve's sister, now married to Johnny Wattimury), Edwin Schwarzl, David Brand and Raymond Nunes (the singer/bass player of my other high school band, Furn).

Jay-Tee Teterissa (known as 'Jopie' back in 1982) was a prodigy on bass, who went pro soon after Umatilla split up. He played on the hit Lily Was Here (by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics and Candy Dulfer) and also recorded with big names including Mike Stern. He recently released a new album, Don't Jay Walk

Nou daar is-ie dan eindelijk: mijn eigen muziekblog, waarop ik wil gaan schrijven over wat muziek voor mij betekent, welke muziek me is opgevallen of heeft beinvloed, en andere zaken op muziekgebied die me de moeite waard lijken. Ik moet nog wel even oefenen... later!!!
